1) BLED, SLOVENIA

This Sloveninan gem is situated 55 km northwest from the capital city Ljubljana. One of the most striking Alpine resorts charms with its enchanting blue-green lake, a little island with a 17th century church in the middle of it  and an impressive medieval castle overlooking the lake on the top of the hill.

You can swim, rent boats, watch rowing clubs practice, take a stroll or visit the castle and gaze on the beautiful and peaceful panorama.

2) PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK, CROATIA

In one of the most impressive European national parks 16 turquoise crystalline lakes tumble into each other via a series of waterfalls and cascades. The mineral-rich water carves the surrounding rocks, continually changing the parks formations.

Veliki Slap is the most famous sight in the national park. It is the tallest waterfall in Croatia reaching the height of 78 m. The national park situated in the deep woodland, covers a total area of 300 square km, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometers.

3) VRELO BUNE, BLAGAJ, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Vrelo Bune – the Buna river spring, lies 12 km south of Mostar. It is the strongest karst spring in Europe. The river flows west for approximately 9 km and joins the Neretva river near the village of Buna. The village-town of Blagaj lies at the spring of the Buna river and is famous for its Blagaj Tekke – a lovely 16^th century monastery with elements of Ottoman architecture.

Vrelo Bune astonishes with its unique natural and historical features and is great to visit throughout the year due to pleasant climate.

4) PAVLOVA STRANA, MONTENEGRO

As a part of the National Park Lake Skadar, the village-town of Rijeka Crnojevića attracts everyone who visits the wonderful Montenegro. One of the most recognizable landscapes in this national park is Pavlova Strana (Paul’s side) – with the view of the winding river wriggling through the glorious mountains.

Renting a boat or a kayak might be a good idea as that’s the best way to gaze on the amazing scenery.

5) OSUM GORGE, ALBANIA

One of the most spectacular Albanian attractions is a 26 km long river gorge formed 2 million years ago by water erosion. It is situated in southern Albania, near the town of Çorovodë. The river Osum, which passes through the town of Berat, flows through the canyon. The gorge includes six narrow sections with many caves and underground passages throughout its length.

The best time to visit the gorge is during springtime when there are waterfalls created by the melting snow. There are also many interesting legends about Osum Gorge told by the locals.

6) OHRID, MACEDONIA

This 3 million year old lake lies between the towns of Ohrid and Struga in southwestern Macedonia, on the border with Albania. The 7^th deepest lake in Europe is surrounded by glorious mountains which makes it even more beautiful. Most of the Ohrid lake water comes from numerous surface and underground springs, which is why it’s so special.

Many people go there during the hot Macedonian summers for a vacation. Aside from relaxing at the lake or enjoying the vibrant nightlife, one can visit numerous ancient churches and monasteries.

7) METEORA, GREECE

Astonishing monasteries built on the tops of natural sandstone rock pillars, in the Thessaly plain in central Greece make Meteora one of the most interesting natural and historical sites in Europe. Emerging about 25 million years ago, these solid rocks have been split by earthquakes and weathered by water and wind over a long period of time. The monasteries were built between the 14^th and the 16^th century and became Orthodox centers, producing many religious arts.

Meteora is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and declared a Natura 2000 Ecological Zone by the Greek Ministry of Environment.

8) BELOGRADCHIK CLIFFS, BULGARIA

The most popular Bulgarian natural phenomenon is situated less than 3 hours northwest of Sofia, near the town of Belogradchik. Amazing cliffs shaped by weather conditions lie scattered in an area of 30 km and some reach an altitude of 200 m. There are five gorgeous eco-trails and a Roman fortification from which you can see the best views of these magnificent rocks.

Be careful though – climbing the rocks is prohibited for safety reasons.

9) RETEZAT NATIONAL PARK, ROMANIA

Retezat National Park is a collection of glaciers, lakes, valleys, peaks and caves that leaves everyone breathless. The oldest Romanian national park has mountain peaks higher than 2 000m and 80 glacial lakes. There are many wild animals in the park so you’ll have a chance to see roe deer, red deer, wild boars, and various bird species.

Retezat is ideal for hiking, walking, trekking, wildlife-watching, camping, climbing, skiing, Nordic skiing, mountain biking and bird watching.

10) THE DEVIL’S TOWN, SERBIA

Đavolja Varoš a.k.a. “The Devil’s Town” is a true wonder of nature, located in southwestern Serbia. Over 200 stone pyramid-like formations created by erosion and two springs of extremely acid water with high mineral content appear totally unreal and create a mystical, yet quite picturesque atmosphere.

The hiking trail highlighted with the amazing scenery takes about 3 hours.

1) TOLEDO, SPAIN

The capital of Castile – La Mancha region is known as the ‘city of the three cultures’ – Christians, Arabs and Jews lived behind its walls together for centuries. The Gothic cathedral, sephardic synagogues, mosques, palaces and the canvases of the famous painter El Greco make the city rich and diverse in both architecture and art, which is why Toledo is declared a World Heritage Site.

2) ROVINJ, CROATIA

This enchanting little town remains one of the last true Mediterranean fishing ports. Fall in love with its narrow cobbled streets, romantic squares, colorful houses with tiny balconies, little shops, art galleries and cafes. There are 14 islands in the archipelago of Rovinj and the most popular are Sveta Katarina and Crveni Otok (the Red Island), also known as Sveti Andrija.

3) BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC

Located in the province of Moravia, Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Its most valuable gems are the crypts, castles, numerous churches and museums, the local cuisine and of course the fertile vineyards of South Moravia. The city’s Old Town Hall is guarded by a two-meter dragon, while the Functionalist Villa Tugendhat found its place on the UNESCO list.

4) ANTWERP, BELGIUM

The second largest city in Belgium is definitely the coolest one. The largest port in the country was the home of the famous baroque painter Pieter Paul Rubens in the 16th century, which is why there are numerous places to admire his works across the city. The vibrant entertainment and fashion scene, hipster cafes, restaurants and bars in a combination with the riverside fortress and a truly impressive cathedral make Antwerp a must see European gem.

5) RENNES, FRANCE

The administrative capital of Bretagne, a province in western France, is also a vibrant university city that can charm your socks off with its medieval old town streets, the impressive parliament building and the Thabor gardens. The best thing about Rennes is definitely the food – the traditional crêpes (sweet) and galettes (savory) are served in many restaurants and occasionally as snacks on the street. Make sure to try the heavenly seafood and the popular cider as well.

6) AREZZO, ITALY

The famous Italian movie ‘La vita è bella’ was filmed in this charming little town. It’s located 80 km southeast of Florence and if you’re in Tuscany you shouldn’t miss seeing it. Arezzo is believed to be one of the twelve most important Etruscan cities and is divided into the upper and the lower town. In the upper part of the town, which has a medieval appearance, you can see the cathedral, the town hall and the Medici Fortress, from which the main streets spread towards the lower part of the town.

7) GRAZ, AUSTRIA

Numerous green parks, red rooftops, a river flowing through the city center, the renaissance courtyards and baroque palaces make Austria’s second-largest city a must see. The famous Schloßberg hill is connected to the center by steps, a funicular and a glass lift which is also the city’s landmark. A young and relaxed vibe, a vibrant art scene and a great nightlife rule the city.

8) COIMBRA, PORTUGAL

Coimbra is both the medieval capital of Portugal, and the country’s greatest university for the past five centuries. Its historical center is situated down a hillside on the east bank of the Rio Mondego. During the academic year, the bars and cafes are full of students and during the warmer seasons the streets are filled with guitar players and fado singers.

9) MOSTAR, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

This city was the most heavily bombed of any Bosnian cities during the Yugoslav wars and it suffered huge consequences. Later on it was rebuilt using some of its original pieces recovered from the Neretva river. The Ottoman style architecture, the Old Bridge which is the landmark of the city, the vivacious markets and friendly people make Mostar one of the nicest places to visit in the Balkans. Walk around the Old Town, don’t try to jump from the Old Bridge, check out Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque and sit by the river to have some ćevapi (a popular minced meat dish) and baklava (a very rich and sweet desert made of thin layers of pastry, nuts and honey).

10) WROCLAW, POLAND

Situated in the middle of the Silesian Lowland, where the Oder River branches forming 12 islands, the city is spanned over 130 bridges. Once described as ‘the holy blossom of Europe’, the city of Wrocław has belonged to Poles, Czechs, Austrians, Hungarians and Germans. These different cultures and religions have of course contributed to its diversity. Wroclaw is a lively cultural center, with major festivals, a great nightlife and a large student community.

Then, after years and years pass, you realize you haven’t really changed the world… but the world sure as hell changed you.” Here are 15 valuable travel and life lessons my long term relationship with the world taught me:

1) TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT

More often than not, when I hear how people talk to each other, how they talk about others or how they treat one another I get really sad. The first and by far the most important life lesson (even if you’ve never traveled) is RESPECT! We never know what a person has been through or what he/she is going through right now. And even if we do, and even if we don’t agree with someone’s life choices or behavior we should always treat people with respect. Treating people disrespectfully never helped anyone and has harmed so many.

2) FIND COMFORT IN YOUR DISCOMFORT ZONE

If you’ve ever traveled you know that although it’s a blast, travel might get uncomfortable at times. Especially if you go somewhere completely different from everything you know. Especially if you do it on a low budget. I’ll never forget how afraid I was leaving Europe to travel alone through Southeast Asia for months. The fear didn’t stop when I arrived there. It didn’t even stop for the first couple of weeks. And although I was discovering great, new, magnificent things, I wasn’t too comfortable. Until I suddenly was. Until I suddenly let go of what I thought I needed and managed to find great comfort outside of my comfort zone.

3) ENCOURAGE YOUR CURIOSITY

Recently someone told me he thought I was brave for traveling alone. I laughed. My travels have nothing to do with bravery. In fact, I’m one of the biggest cowards ever. However, I am very, very curious. Passionately, madly curios. So thank God I’m not a cat (allegedly curiosity kills cats only)!

4) GET CREATIVE

If you’ve ever traveled on a low budget, backpacked, stayed in hostels, camped or anything similar you already know you won’t have all the things you normally use. For a couple of months in Southeast Asia I only had an 8 kg backpack – 4 shirts, 2 shorts, flip flops and sneakers. Being a woman, that’s quite challenging. So I started wearing the shirts I had inside out and suddenly I had 8 shirts instead of 4.

5) BE KIND TO PEOPLE

The latest trip I went on was the hardest trip in my life. The people were very pushy and difficult to interact with. However, I am the one visiting the country, the country didn’t visit me. Therefore, I have to adjust, whether I find someone’s behavior rude or not. Moreover, you never know why someone acts rude –  maybe they’re having a bad day or going through something terrible. Maybe they’re just genuine pricks. Whatever the case is, be kind – for both yours and other people’s sake.

6) KEEP THINGS SIMPLE

This travel lesson can apply to a vast number of life situations. If you’ve ever backpacked or traveled with just a carry on you know you can only pack your essentials. So maybe we should start perceiving  life as a trip as well, maybe we should really think about what our life essentials are and get rid of all that clutter that somehow got in the way.

7) EMBRACE DIFFERENCES

Living abroad, traveling and hanging out with people from different parts of the world can be challenging. You come across cultural differences, language barriers, unintentional misunderstandings… However, by embracing one another’s differences our lives become so much richer. If someone ever told me I would be able to swear in Hungarian, to have a mini conversation in Hebrew, to learn so much about the war in Cambodia firsthand, to sing songs in Urdu (even if I don’t know what the lyrics say), to have a better understanding of so many cultures I would call them crazy. But that’s what embracing differences does to you.

8) BE PATIENT

This is a tricky one, because we live in the world of NOW. We live in the world of INSTANTLY. You wanna see a certain series? Just go online, you can find every episode of every single show. You want your favorite band’s latest LP? Download it, you don’t need to save up some money to go buy it in the record store. The thing is though, people’s minds haven’t evolved the same way the internet has. People need time. Someone needs less time, someone needs more time. But most of the things simply cannot happen right here and right now, instantly, immediately. We have to understand that and start implementing it in all kinds of life situations.

9) LEARN TO SPEND TIME ALONE

I’ve always wanted to live in Paris – it seemed as the most romantic and exciting place in the world. And then I moved to Paris for an exchange student program. And it sucked. It sucked big time. It was very hard to get to know people, my French didn’t reach a level the people would approve of and I felt quite lonely. But then I learnt how to have a glass of wine by myself, how to go to museums by myself, how to go to concerts by myself, how to have lunch and walk the city’s charming and lovable streets by myself. I finally started hanging out with Paris, and it turns out – it is, in fact, one of the most romantic and exciting places in the world.

10) SEE THE POSITIVE IN THE NEGATIVE

If you’re a true, hardcore traveler you won’t just be interested in the popular sights of a place you’re visiting. You’ll want to see how the locals live and how less popular parts of the cities and countries look like. You’ll see poverty, you’ll see crime, you’ll see human struggles you weren’t even aware existed. You’ll also discover there’s so much beauty and positivity amongst the less fortunate. I didn’t get the best memories from seeing a famous building or visiting a museum. The best memories include talking to people who have far less than one could ever imagine and are happy with the little they have. The best memories include having a meal with someone who was generous enough to share it with you, even if you were a complete stranger. This is what really shakes you to the core – the amount of positivity in a somewhat negative world.

11) GET RID OF PREJUDICE

Unfortunately, the world is full of assumptions and prejudice. Our perception of people and things is highly influenced by the society and the mass media. The fact that we can easily dismiss prejudice through traveling is just amazing. Until you’ve actually spent time with someone, until you’ve actually given someone the chance to show you who they are, how they live and why they live like that you simply cannot understand them. And even when you do understand, don’t judge.

12) COLLECT MOMENTS, NOT THINGS

I would be lying if I said I didn’t like things. More in particular, shoes. And dresses. However, I can’t say any pair of shoes or a dress brought eternal happiness or fulfillment in my life. On the other hand, collecting moments and creating a colorful collage of memories – whether through traveling the world, walking the streets of the cities I’ve lived in, getting to know people from all over the world or learning a new language definitely has.

13) REALIZE THAT TRAVELING DOESN’T MAKE YOU ANY BETTER

In the western culture nowadays, travel is an unspoken must. People literally feel the pressure of having to travel, because it’s fashionable, because everybody is doing it, because you’re a “better person” if you travel. But let me tell you a little secret: TRAVELING DOESN’T MAKE YOU ANY BETTER – a change of a location doesn’t necessarily change your state of mind. Stamps in your passport and all the kilometers you’ve crossed don’t make any difference if you don’t decide to make a difference. The core of who you are and what you carry inside of you doesn’t change with a 15 hour flight. If you’re a genuine prick there’s quite a possibility you’ll remain a prick even after a 15 hour flight.

14) SMILE

There are times when I don’t feel like smiling, there are times when I can’t get rid of my frown. However, if there’s something I learnt it’s that a smile can change so much. When you smile at someone, even if you don’t know them, it makes you feel good (unless it’s your crush and he/she looks the other way – then you feel pretty much like shit). When someone smiles back at you it makes you feel even better. And when your smile turns someone’s frown into a smile, well that’s just wonderful.

15) FIND OUT WHAT MATTERS TO YOU

Stop feeling bad about not having your life all figured out. Most of the people don’t have it all figured out either, even if they say they do. Instead of dealing with the immense pressure of figuring out your entire life, why don’t you just focus on discovering what matters to you. You can even do it through a process of elimination – try a bunch of different things, hell, try everything, see what floats your boat and try to do these things more often.

THE NORTH

CHEFCHAOUEN (“THE BLUE CITY”) – the name of the city translates to “two horns” in Arabic because it’s hidden in a rural slope in between the Rif mountains. The city’s medina (the old walled part of the town) is entirely colored in blue. The rumors say that the buildings might be painted blue because it helps to keep away the mosquitoes. This charming little town is surely the best place to visit in the north of the country as the blue medina filled with flower pots and all kinds of colorful Moroccan goodies make it the most photogenic town in the country. The locals speak Arabic, French and Spanish however one can get around with English as well. Since it’set high in the mountains nights tend to be quite cold so make sure to bring warm clothes if you’re visiting Morocco during the colder seasons.

I stayed in the Aline hostel near the medina: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Aline-Hostel/Chefchaouen/15869 – it was a very nice and friendly place to stay, however, as most places in Morocco they don’t have heat and it can get quite cold during the night (bringing a sleeping bag might be a good idea). The price of a bed in a shared dorm is around 6€ per night.

BETWEEN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AND THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS

FEZ – the imperial city with the largest and the oldest medina in the country is definitely a must see. The thing about the Moroccan medinas, especially the one in Fez, is that it’s quite easy to get lost there as they’re not exactly built in a planned way. The narrow alleys and the streets without names or numbers tend to confuse a lot of tourists, which is why locals offer their help, however, they also charge people for showing them the direction. The medina is full of movement and shops with traditional Moroccan goodies and food, but the most interesting thing to see is the famous tannery. Since the smell near the tannery is quite bad I suggest rubbing some mint leaves on your hands and smelling your hands. Outside of the Medina there is a wonderful park called Jnane Sbil and it’s definitely worth checking out.

I stayed in the Funky Fes hostel near the medina: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Funky-Fes/Fez/50393. The interior is quite nice, but the rooms and the shower were very cold. The price of a bed in a shared dorm is around 6€ per night. Breakfast is included in the price.

MEKNES – with just a 40 minute train ride from Fez you can reach the city of Meknes. The fortified walls and the gates were the creation of Moulay Ismail, a Moroccon sultan. Check out the most impressive Moroccan gate called Bab Mansour, get lost in the city’s medina (unfortunately it’s not nearly as impressive as the one in Fez) and make sure to visit the Madraza Bou Inania, a student residency with some wonderful Moroccan style tile-work. Other than that Meknes doesn’t have much to offer, but north of the city you can visit the holy mountain town of Moulay Idriss and the Roman ruins of Volulibis.

THE ATLANTIC COAST

RABAT – it has been the capital of Morocco since 1912 and it holds some of the most interesting monuments. Moreover, the economy doesn’t depend exclusively on tourism like in most of the Moroccan cities, so even though it’s quite conservative I felt less attacked by the local merchants. Discovering the city’s medina is very nice since the alleys aren’t as small and it’s much easier to get around than in other medinas. A stroll next to the Bou Regreg river – just outside the medina is quite lovely and a visit to the Mausoleum of Mohamed V is definitely a must.

I stayed in the Medina Surfing Association: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Medina-Surfing-Association/Rabat/264840 and it was the worst place I’ve stayed in during my Moroccan trip. It’s totally overpriced – about 15€ per night for a bed in a dorm. The sheets were dirty, the WiFi wasn’t working, they put 10 beds in a room where you can obviously fit 6 beds tops and the shower was cold. The breakfast was pretty bad too.

CASABLANCA – even though everyone was telling me there’s nothing to see in Morocco’s largest city I couldn’t resist going to Casablanca. As it turned out they were right – there isn’t much to see, but I’m not sorry I went. The most impressive and practically the only thing to see in Casablanca is the Hasan II Mosque which is huge and absolutely glorious from the outside. However, I wouldn’t recommend paying 120 Moroccan Dirhams (around 12€)  to get inside because it’s not worth it. Casablanca’s medina is nothing special, in fact there’s nothing to see there and it’s quite dangerous. That goes for the rest of the city too. Visiting the beach can be quite nice, and if you’re a fan of Casablanca the movie, check out the famous Rick’s Cafe – it’s totally overpriced (breakfast costs around 15€) but the interior is breathtaking (I went inside, took a couple of photos and went outside – as rude as that might be).

I stayed in Hotel Central which is located both near the medina and the Hasan II Mosque: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Hotel-Central/Casablanca/18172 because I was dying to get some alone time and a proper shower (+ it was Christmas so it was my Christmas gift to myself). The price of a double room with a private shower was 30€ per night. It included a very good breakfast (actually the best one I’ve had in Morocco).

ESSAOUIRA – this eighteen century town enclosed by medieval forts is one of my favorite places in Morocco. The medina is full of art galleries, wood workshops, traditional spices and clothes. The beach is very nice and climbing the fort next to the port gives you a wonderful view of both the town and the Atlantic ocean. The thing I liked best was the less aggressive and less sexist vibe – there were even women in the bars and they were smoking. There are daily trips from Marrakesh which include the stop at the Argan oil factory (the price is around 20€).

CENTRAL MOROCCO

MARRAKESH – Morocco’s biggest tourist attraction is definitely Marrakesh, also called the Red City because of the red ochre pigment on its walls and buildings. The origin of the city is more Berber (the descendants of the pre-Arab inhabitants of North Africa) than Arab. The main square – Jemaa el Fna, full of food stands, musicians and performers is set at the heart of the medina. Even though it’s really exotic and interesting I hated seeing chained monkeys and snakes for tourists to take photos with. The souks are situated north of the main square and there is an abundance of Moroccan spices, traditional clothes, all kinds of food and jewelry. I found the souks in Marrakesh the nicest in Morocco, they are colorful and lovely, however, the merchants are extremely aggressive, persuasive in a non pleasant way and they’re trying to rip you off in a non human way. The landmark of the city is the Koutoubia Minaret which is quite nice to see. The Majorelle Garden, which is about 3km from the medina is one of the biggest attractions in Marrakesh, but even though it’s very nice I think it’s really overpriced compared to other sites (the entrance to both the garden and the museum will cost you about 10€). The Bahia Palace is definitely worth seeing – it’s a typical Moroccan style palace with stunning tile-work and the entrance is only 1€. The ruins of the El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs are also worth checking out and they cost 1€ each as well.

I stayed at the Madrassa Hostel in the Medina: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/The-Madrassa/Marrakech/267181. The price for a bed in a dorm was 10€ per night, and breakfast was included (a really good one too). The staff was nice, it wasn’t too cold, the WiFi worked, the entire Riad (a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard) is very nice and the terrace is awesome.

THE WESTERN SAHARA

SAHARA – the largest hot dessert in the world stretches throughout North Africa. There are organized trips to Western Sahara which you can purchase in travel agencies all over Marrakesh. A three day trip shouldn’t cost more than 70-80€. Be aware of the fact that the days in the dessert tend to get very hot while the nights tend to get very cold. If you’re visiting Morocco during the colder season make sure to bring a sleeping bag and warm clothes.

TIPS & TRICKS

FOOD – Moroccan cuisine is very interesting – the Tajine and the Couscous are definitely a must. I would highly recommend Pastella, the best dish I ate in Morocco – it’s a sort of a pancake with powder sugar on the top, filled with chicken and almonds. The snail soup is quite famous but if you’re not into experimenting I wouldn’t recommend it. The traditional mint tea is to die for.

TRANSPORTATION – it’s quite easy to get around by bus (make sure to pick the CTM bus, the others are not as good), as well as by train. The prices are not too expensive. A train ticket from Fez to Meknes (45 minute ride) was around 2,5€, the bus from Fez to Chefchaouen (4,5 hour ride) was around 9€, the bus from Chefchaouen to Rabat (5,5 hour ride) was 10€, the train from Rabat to Casablanca (an hour ride) was around 5€, the train from Casablanca from Marrakesh was around 9€.

However, the use of cabs is inevitable in Morocco and that’s where the problems start. Being a tourist in Morocco means a lot of bargaining and negotiation. Almost every cab driver will try charging a price that is 10 times higher than usual. Don’t accept that and ask for the taxi meter to be switched on. If the cab driver doesn’t agree wait for the next one, be persistent, otherwise you’ll loose a lot of money on cab rides.

SHOPPING – one simply cannot resist the colorful souks with all kinds of shops. Whether you’re looking for spices, Moroccan lanterns, amazing jewelry, traditional shoes and clothes or you want to get a traditional Henna tattoo – you will have a huge choice. However, practice your bargain skills before your trip to Morocco because if you don’t bargain good you’ll loose a lot of money. The merchants tend to charge up to 10 times more than the actual value of the goods.

RESPECT THE CULTURE – make sure you’re respectful of the Moroccan culture. Dress properly, because otherwise it might seem provocative. When entering a mosque taking shoes off is a must. Treat everyone nice and with respect even though they might not treat you in the same way. Usually there are only men in bars so try finding more touristic places with both women and men (even though they’re more expensive) to make both them and yourself feel more comfortable.

THE PEOPLE – the thing about Morocco is that as a tourist you interact mostly with men – they work on the souks, they work in the bars and restaurants and they tend to be quite pushy and aggressive, and they’ll do anything in their power to rip you off. Having traveled a lot, I am aware that the tourist prices differ from the local prices, however, there’s a moderate rip off and the “Moroccon rip off” which is everything but moderate. While sightseeing, more often than not, the locals follow you around offering to show you the direction, asking you to purchase things in their shop, inviting you to their restaurant – which could be nice if they wouldn’t follow you around and harass you until you say yes. Ignoring them doesn’t help because they start following you, saying no doesn’t help because they start persuading you… So the best advice I can give you is telling them: “I’ll come back later.”

The approach the locals have towards men is quite different from the one they have towards women which can be quite difficult especially if you’re a solo female traveler. I’ve heard an abundance of sexist comments and it was really unpleasant. If you’re still keen on traveling solo try to pair up with other solo travelers from the hostel because it makes it a lot easier. I find the people in Marrakesh the most difficult to deal with, and the ones in Essaouira the least difficult – even though it wasn’t a walk in the park even there.

1) VISIT AMAZING BEACHES

Besides the fact that you won’t freeze your ass off, as the Adriatic is quite warm, the variety of the beaches is incredible. Whether you’re the sandy beach type or the rocks  and deep sea type you’ll be more than satisfied. Here are some amazing beaches suggestions: STINIVA – Vis island, ZLATNI RAT – Brač island, LUBENICE – Cres island, SLANICA – Murter island, VELA PRŽINA – Korčula island, PUNTA RATA – Brela.

2) TRY THE LOCAL FOOD

When you travel to a new place you have to try the local food. And believe me, in Croatia we’re all about the food. So when you’re at the coast, look for places called KONOBA – small, traditional, rustic restaurants with awesome homemade food and wine. Order some of the following dishes and enjoy: DALMATINSKI PRŠUT and PAŠKI SIR as an appetizer; DALMATINSKA PAŠTICADA , HOBOTNICA ISPOD PEKE, ŠKAMPI NA BUZARU, RIBA S GRADELA, LIGNJE NA ŽARU or BRODET as a main course; and FRITULE or ROŽATA as a desert. No description necessary – just try it, you can thank me later.

 3) KEEP HYDRATED

The temperatures can get pretty high and keeping hydrated is a must! Besides some fine homemade wines you can find in wine producing households in every village/town on the coast, don’t leave Croatia without trying RAKIJA – a traditional spirit with loads of  different flavors (herbs, honey, different fruit…). Here are some rakijas worth trying out: MEDICA, TRAVARICA, ORAHOVAC, LOZA, ŠLJIVOVICA…  Traditionally Croats drink a beer and then a shot of rakija – then repeat! Keep in mind to drink water while repeating this action, as we don’t want you to spend the next day hungover in bed.

4) LISTEN TO KLAPE

It might seem like an activity for older people but this traditional a cappella singing from the Dalmatian region has touched many younger souls as well. Beautiful songs, mostly about love, go well with some traditional food and wine in konoba restaurants. YouTube some of the following and see for yourself: KLAPA CAMBI, KLAPA INTRADE, KLAPA KAMPANEL. You can find these traditional concerts all over the coast.

5) DO SOME EXTREME SPORTS

If you were smart enough not to drink too much rakija last night, you might want to do some extreme sports in Croatia’s wonderful nature. Rent a jet ski and cruise around some bays, bungee jump from a bridge for an amazing upside-down view, wind-surf, kite-surf, go rafting or canoeing. Just make sure to be safe cause you’ve got plenty more things to experience in Croatia. We don’t have time for injuries in our itinerary.

6) HAVE A GREAT PARTY

A great number of the best underground electronic festivals in Europe are taking place on the Croatian coast this summer – HIDEOUT, LOVE INTERNATIONAL, DEFECTED, MOVEMENT, DIMENSIONS, SONUS… If you’re up for showing off your dance moves or simply enjoying some great beats, check this festivals out.

7) CYCLE

Nowadays it’s very popular to cycle in between different villages or towns in the Adriatic coast. Yeah it might seem a bit hard to cycle for tens or hundreds of kilometers, but what’s a bit of exercise compared to the amazing scenery, and taking breaks in hidden bays you wouldn’t get to see otherwise?

8) VISIT A NATIONAL PARK

Croatia is a home to 8 national parks and visiting at least one of them while you’re here is definitely a must. These are the national parks: 1) BRIJUNI,  2) KORNATI, 3) KRKA,  4) MLJET,  5) PAKLENICA, 6) PLITVIČKA JEZERA, 7) RISNJAK, 8) SJEVERNI VELEBIT. Try to check out the one nearest to you – all of them are bloody awesome and whichever you choose, you won’t regret it.

9) CHECK OUT THE CULTURAL HERITAGE

If you know a bit about history, you might have heard about our vast cultural heritage. There are 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: 1) PLITVIČKA JEZERA, 2) HISTORICAL COMPLEX OF SPLIT WITH THE PALACE OF DIOCLETIAN, 3) OLD CITY OF DUBROVNIK, 4) EPISCOPAL COMPLEX OF THE EUPHRASIAN BASILICA IN THE HISTORIC CENTER OF POREČ, 5) HISTORIC CITY OF TROGIR, 6) CATHEDRAL OF SAINT JAMES IN ŠIBENIK, 7) STARI GRAD PLAIN IN HVAR. The remains of the Roman Empire, Byzantine art and Renaissance monuments will keep those in need of culture occupied.

10) GO SAILING

If you have a bit more money than an average backpacker in your pocket or you’re travelling with a group of people it’s a great idea to rent a sail boat. Sailing from the north to the south of the coast or vice versa will give you a chance to explore some of the amazing smaller islands that might seem out of reach otherwise. Plus – you’ll get to see some dolphins, which is quite cool.

1) SUKHOTHAI, THAILAND

Sukhothai (“the dawn of happiness”) is located 430 km north of Bangkok. It was founded in the 13th century and it was the capital of the Thai Empire for 140 years. The old city had four gates and a triple wall. In the center of the city there was a pond, to the west a monastery, to the east a lake, to the north a market, and to the south the Khao Luang hill. Till today 193 temples have been excavated and partly reconstructed. You can get there by taking a bus from Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and find cheap accommodation in the modern city of New Sukhothai. The best way to see the ruins in this historical park is by renting a bike and riding through the old city as it’s quite big and the ruins are quite scattered so it might be hard to see everything on foot.

2) CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

It is situated 700 km north of Bangkok amongst the highest mountains in the country. Its historic trading importance comes from the proximity to the Ping River. Slowly growing in cultural, trading, and economic importance this city gained a status of the unofficial capital of Northern Thailand. There’s so much to see inside the walls surrounding the old city – temples rise from each and every corner, there’s a lovely night bazaar and on Sundays the principal street becomes a huge market for which even the traffic stops and traders from all over the province come to sell their goods. After exploring the city make sure to visit Doi Suthep hill to the northwest – there’s a wonderful temple on the top, Karen long neck village – with strangely long necked women and Rajapruek Royal Park – a place where countries of the world are represented in their traditional gardens.

3) LUANG PRABANG, LAOS

Northwest Laos, 300 km north from the capital Vientiane. The old town center of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The main part of the city consists of four main roads on a peninsula between the Khan and Mekong rivers. Besides the charming night market, the dark rivers, the glorious mountains and numerous Buddhist temples, the most impressive thing is the walk of alms – every morning, hundreds of monks from various monasteries walk through the streets collecting alms from the citizens. So make sure to wake up at sunrise to witness this lovely ceremony.

4) SAPA, VIETNAM

Northwest Vietnam, 380 km northwest from the capital Hanoi. Sapa is a quiet mountain town and home to a diversity of ethnic minority people, out of which only 15 % live in Sapa and the rest is scattered in small communes throughout the district. Most people work on their land on sloping terraces, since the majority of the land is mountainous. Sapa is now in full economic boom, mainly due to tourists who come here to walk the hundreds of miles of trekking trails between and around the villages of Ta Van and Ta Phin. If you’re more of a nature type and you prefer active vacation – make sure to visit this lovely mountainous area.

5) HALONG BAY, VIETNAM

Probably the most impressive bay in the world consists of thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate which has created fascinating biodiversity. You can take a three hour bus ride from Hanoi to get there and then you’ll have to get on a boat to explore the bay. The downside is the fact that there are tourists, a lot of them, but the upside is that you’ll be so amazed by the beauty of the weird shaped islands and caves – you won’t think about other tourists much. Definitely a must see in Vietnam.

6) HOI AN, VIETNAM

The most charming little town located in central Vietnam, on the coast of the South China Sea. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is not at all surprising – considering the amount of history you can find in its buildings and streets. The ancient town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century, which is why both local and foreign influence is visible in the city’s architecture. After exploring the ancient town, rent a bicycle or a motorbike and hit the coast. Not only is the ride itself amazing as you’ll pass by many rice fields and witness amazing scenery, but lying under a palm tree on a sandy beach will definitely do you good. A cool thing to try out here is to get enrolled into a cooking class and learn how to prepare traditional Vietnamese food – yum!

7) SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA

The city with colonial style architecture, old markets and fishing villages is most famous for its proximity to the Angkor temples – which is the most important must see in Southeast Asia, whether you’re a Lara Croft fan or not. Angkor Wat is the most relevant feature of the UNESCO World Heritage Site containing remains of the Khmer civilization. However, Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm, Ta Keo, Ta Som and many other temples are just as interesting. Make sure to wake up before sunrise and check out the pink sky as the sun rises above the Angkor Wat. Also, make sure to try the Cambodian fish amok – a traditional Khmer dish.

8) BATTAMBANG PROVINCE, CAMBODIA

Battambang city is the capital of Battambang provice – however, you won’t find much to do there. The thing to do is to rent a tuk-tuk (a typical Southeast Asian three wheel mode of transportation) or a motorbike and to explore the province. Full of rice fields, small villages, scattered temples, mountains and smiling faces, this province shows the true, very modest yet happy local life in Cambodia. The people are way nicer as they’re not exposed to tourism on daily bases, the food tastes better as it’s prepared on the spot and the scenery is simply breathtaking.

9) TIOMAN ISLAND, MALAYSIA

Tioman island is a small island in Pahang province, Malaysia, located about 30 km off the east coast of the state. Consisting of small villages and poorly inhabited, it’s a perfect getaway if you’re looking for some tropical paradise peace and quiet. Numerous coral reefs with diverse marine life make the island even more appealing to divers, while others have more than enough to explore in the inland rain-forest. According to the legend, Tioman Island is the resting place of a beautiful dragon princess who was seeking comfort in the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea on her way to visit her prince.

10) GILI ISLANDS, INDONESIA

The Gili islands are an archipelago of three small islands: Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan – the largest of the three. The Gili islands are located northwest of Lombok island. What’s special about this tropical paradise is the fact that motorized traffic is forbidden, so you can either walk, cycle or take a carriage ride. The coral formations around the islands are the cause of a very diverse marine life, which makes diving quite popular. You can get there by taking a local boat ride from the northwest of Lombok island.

1) LJUBLJANA

This little jewel with the population of around 270 000 people is the capital and the largest city in Slovenia. The Ljubljanica river flows through the center of the city, past Baroque buildings and under the ancient castle on the hill. The vibe here is very comfortable and pleasant. The city is not huge so you can take your time strolling around and enjoying colorful buildings and charming parks. Check out Tromostovje (the Triple Bridge – three separate pitoresque bridges located one next to another), Zmajski most (the Dragon Bridge), the Ljubljana Castle and Prešeren Square. Ljubljana is especially nice during the summer when it hosts many musical events, street performances and a variety of workshops.

2) ZAGREB

Croatia’s capital is located on the Sava river, beneath Medvednica mountain. This vibrant city of around 800 000 people is characterized by Austro-Hungarian architecture, a lot of parks and charming little streets, which is why it manages to attract tourists from all over the world. Give yourself the opportunity to fall in love with its historical Upper Town where you can see St. Mark’s Church, the Cathedral, the Old Town Gate (Kamenita vrata) or have a stroll through Strossmayer’s Promenade. In the colorful downtown  you can see the Flower Square (Cvjetni trg), the Croatian National Theatre, King Tomislav Square and Zrinjevac park.  Zagreb is known for the relaxing culture of sitting in cafés and tiny restaurants for hours. Renting a bike might be a good idea – you can cover most of the city sights by biking.

3) BELGRADE

The capital and largest city of Serbia is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The city has a population of about 1.3 million people. The historical core of Belgrade lies on the banks of both rivers. Make sure to visit the Kalemegdan Fortress, the National Museum, the National Theatre and Kneza Mihailova Street. If you’re in for some history check out The House of Flowers (Josip Broz Tito’s mausoleum) or The White Palace (a formal royal residence of the Karađorđević dynasty). If you’re in for some recreation stop by Ada Ciganlija – a former island on the Sava river which is nowadays connected to its right bank, creating an artificial lake. The restaurant/bar/café culture is even more pronounced than in Croatia. In addition, Belgrade has a reputation for its amazing nightlife; many clubs with a variety of musical genres can be found easily so make sure to bring your dancing shoes.

4) SARAJEVO

The capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of about 370 000 people is often called the „Jerusalem of Europe“. It was, until late in the 20th century the only major European city to have a mosque, a Catholic church, an Orthodox church and a synagogue within the same neighborhood. This city is a great example of historical turbulance as well as an example of tolerance. It was where the Western and the Eastern Roman Empire split and where the Roman Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox and the southern Ottoman people had to coexist. Although not huge, Sarajevo is an extremely vivacious city, famous for diversity, very friendly people and excellent food. Make sure to visit the magical Old Town (in my humble opinion the nicest Old Town in the Balkans), the academy of Fine Arts, the Latin Bridge, the Yellow Fortress and the City Hall. And if you found the restaurant/bar/café culture pleasant in Croatia and Serbia, brace yourself for Bosnia and Herzegovina. You’ll taste the best coffee and have the best food here. Trying a local specialty called ćevapi (grilled minced meat that melts in your mouth like butter) is a must.

5) NOVI SAD

Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina, the northern Autonomous Province of Serbia. It is situated between Budapest and Belgrade and has a population of about 250 000 people. This treasured cultural center is most famous for the Petrovaradin Fortress, that no enemy has ever overtaken. What makes the fortress even more famous is the EXIT festival that has been taking place here since the year 2000, covering a variety of musical genres and making a huge number of people from all over the world dance their souls off. Make sure to check out the Old Town Hall on the main city square called Trg Slobode, the Cathedral Church of the Holy Great-Martyr George, the Church of Virgin’s name and Dunđerski dvorac – a wonderfully preserved castle situated to the north of the city.

6) MOSTAR

This city was the most heavily bombed of any Bosnian cities during the war and it suffered huge consequences. Mostar is most famous for its beautiful historic Ottoman style bridge that crosses the Neretva river in the historic center of the city. It was rebuilt after the war using some of its original pieces recovered from the river. A significant portion of the city has been rebuilt and now it’s a lively and beautiful destination once again. The Ottoman style architecture, the vivacious markets and friendly people make Mostar one of the nicest places to visit in the Balkans. Walk around the Old Town, don’t try to jump from the Old Bridge, check out Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque and sit by the river to have some ćevapi and baklava (a very rich and sweet desert made of thin layers of pastry, nuts and honey).

7) BUDVA

Located in the centre of the Montenegrian coast this Monte Carlo type destination developed around a small peninsula – on which the Old Town is sitauted. The vibrant nightlife, luxury resorts and numerous lovely beaches are the reason for mass tourism. Some might find that type of tourism off-putting (present company included), however, one should then focus on the truly charming Old Town, its wonderful citadel, its stone houses and dazzling little streets, its cafés, small bars and restaurants, and the beaches around the city. If you feel like dancing though make sure to visit Top Hill, the best club in Montenegro.

8) OHRID

Ohrid is a city in southwestern Macedonia on the shore of Lake Ohrid. Due to its vast history it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located between the glorious mountains and a three million year old lake it’s not only a place of historic significance but also of natural beauty. Therefore, many people go there during the hot Macedonian summers for a vacation. Aside from relaxing at the lake or enjoying the nightlife, one can visit numerous ancient churches and monasteries which are definitely worth exploring. Check out St. Sophia’s Church and the small and picturesque St. John Kaneo Church. There is also a wonderful ancient fortress at the top of the city.

9) DUBROVNIK

This UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most prominent tourist resorts is most known for its impressive Old Town, surrounded by massive stone walls from the 16th century. Even the makers of the Game of Thrones recognized its beauty, which is why the series is being filmed here. It is also known for its stunning architecture and sculptures, for extraordinary churches and museums, and for a vibrant atmosphere. Take a tour of the city walls, a walk in the Stradun (the principal street) and for the most incredible view – climb the Srđ mountain behind the walled city and feast your eyes out.

10) KOTOR

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro famous for its medieval structures and a breath-taking natural setting at the very edge of the Kotor Bay (a natural fjord like bay). The city has developed around the Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What’s special about Kotor is the fact that it was built like a maze for protective purposes and it’s very easy to lose your way (even locals get lost sometimes). However, looking for landmarks, such as the lovely 12th century St. Tryphon Cathedral helps. Climbing up the upper walls and gazing the amazing view is definitely a must when visiting this lovely city.
